At our Village Board meeting of August 25th, with Hurricane Irene bearing down upon us, and with many residents of our riverfront areas asking where they should park during the impending storm, the Village Board voted unanimously to offer free parking in the Riverspace parking lots from 4:00 P.M. Saturday. August 27th until 11:00 A.M. Monday, August 29th.
Although we kept alternate side of the street parking regulations on side streets such as 4th Avenue in effect so that emergency vehicles would be able to rescue citizens in need, we instructed our Parking Enforcement Agents not to issue tickets during the storm and to focus on higher, more critical priorities. One of our senior agents, however, did issue tickets for vehicles that he thought might create problems for first responders. Fortunately, none of the vehicles who received tickets on the side streets around Gedney Street got in the way of our emergency vehicles.
Given the unique nature of the storm and the extenuating circumstances we described above, the Village Board will direct the Parking Authority to dismiss all tickets for locational violations that were issued between the hours of 4:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 27th and 11:00 A.M. on Monday, August 29th. In the future, we will make sure that our alert system and website will help make communication more clear and efficient.
