Sandra Baptista is a senior research associate at the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) at Columbia University’s Earth Institute where she works on a variety of projects addressing sustainability and environmental issues. She earned her Ph.D. and M.S. in Geography at Rutgers University where she taught undergraduate courses in Geography and Human Ecology. Her dissertation examined forest cover changes, urbanization, human population dynamics, socio-economic inequalities, and environmental governance in a rapidly urbanizing coastal region of southern Brazil. She received her B.A. in Environmental Studies and Portuguese and Brazilian Studies from Brown University. Sandra and her husband have been residents of Nyack since 2011. She joined the tree committee to help promote sustainability in the Village.
